1770: SS Rajamouli’s assistant Ashwin Gangaraju directs a freedom struggle spectacle

Filmmaker’s assistant SS Rajamouli Ashwin Gangaraju is ready to direct a historical drama. The film, titled 1770, was announced on Wednesday.

“Next up 🙂 Big Dream Pumped up to bring this heroic epic story to the big screens #1770Movie Blessed to work with #VijayendraPrasad Sir and the amazing team @Ramkamal @shhailendrakku @SurajSh25970268 @SujoyySrk @BuddyKrishna,” Ashwin tweeted, during he announced the film .

The film’s creative poster suggests that it is about the struggle for freedom against colonial powers. It depicts a fighter armed with a sword about to charge at gun-toting enemies.

1770 is based on the Bengali novel Anandamath by legendary writer Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. The poem Vande Maataram, which he wrote for the novel, became the country’s national song after independence. The film will be adapted for the screen by well-known screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, father of SS Rajamouli.

Vijayendra also co-wrote India’s biggest global earners, the Baahubali series and RRR.

Ashwin Gangaraju had assisted SS Rajamouli in the creation of Eega, Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion. He later ventured into his own right with his debut film Aakashavaani, which was also a historical play. The film revolved around the events that unfolded when remote tribes discovered a radio in the forest. The film was released direct to SonyLIV last year.

1770 is Ashwin’s most ambitious project, as the film’s scale and scope is ten times larger than his debut film. The film will be shot in Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Creators are in the process of finalizing the cast and are expected to reveal the details of Deepavali later this year.
