A message to our community regarding Esoteric Esa and HipLatina

To our Mitú community,

First of all, we would like to thank you for your patience as we conclude our investigation. This incident weighs heavily on all of us at mitú. It is in complete contrast to our mission to inspire, nurture, and serve the Latino community. We undertake to take all possible measures to prevent this from happening.

We have ended our relationship with the author who inappropriately elevated the original Esoteric Esa work for HipLatina and assure you that he will never write for mitú again. We strongly encourage the author to apologize to Esoteric Esa.

The author submitted the article as his own work mitú which turned out not to be true. While we did not know that the author was plagiarizing another author’s work, the article we published contained errors that should have been identified and investigated, and prompted us to investigate further. We adhere to the highest ethical standards and take the following steps to ensure this does not happen again:

1. We are accelerating the implementation of plagiarism detection software for all new and existing editorial content on wearemitu.com, starting with this author’s articles.

2. We are introducing an additional round of editing and reviewing all editorial content in the future.

3. We hire outside consultants to strengthen our editorial guidelines and practices for our internal staff as well as all contributing authors.

We sincerely apologize to Esoteric Esa and HipLatina. We value Esoteric Esa as the creator and individual of the Latino community. We have reached out to them privately and hope to fix the cause of this incident. We respect HipLatina as a co-publication dedicated to inspiring and empowering Latinas, and will continue to advocate for more voices and publications to positively influence and represent our Latinx communities.
