Cedarville beats Wheeling 2-0 in front of 1,278 fans
HIGHLIGHTS
CEDARVILLE, OH – Michael Payne and Mauricio Ochoa Vazquez scored the goals as the Yellow Jackets opened the 2022 season with a 2-0 record over Gast Wheeling.
1,278 fans came to the “Pack the Track Night”.
Payne headed into a corner Victor Pomelli in the 21st minute for the first record of the campaign.
Pomelli’s 25-yard free-kick in the 49′ was headed home by Vazquez.
goalkeeper Jared Zacharias made two saves while posting his ninth career shutout.
Stinger Notes:
- Payne’s goal was the first of his career while Vazquez scored his 15th.
- The Yellow Vests had the shooting advantage: 14-9 on aggregate and 5-3 on target.
- Wheeling attempted five corner kicks compared to two for Cedarville.
- It was the first-ever men’s soccer meeting between the two schools.
- After a break of several years, the CU students were allowed back onto the track to cheer from the field level.
