Cincinnati’s season ends with a loss to Tulane

CLEARWATER, Florida– The University of Cincinnati baseball team’s season ended with a 13-5 loss to Tulane on Friday in the 2022 AAC tournament.

Redshirt pitcher sophomore Alex Shea (0-4) got the ball at the start for Cincinnati (24-31) and took the loss. freshman pitcher Tommy O’Connor came out of the bullpen and hit five batters over three innings.

In addition to his three hits, Redshirt is a sophomore infielder Ryan Nicholson had a double, a home run, a walk and three RBIs to lead the Bearcats. Senior infielder redshirt Dondrae Bremner also went deep, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Outfielder sophomore Cabbage Harting also contributed, compiling two hits in four trips to the plate and adding a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bearcats were down 9-0 in the fourth inning as they put runs on the board for the first time. Cincinnati went over two runs when Nicholson left the yard with the redshirt junior outfielder Griffin Merritt on board.

The Bearcats kept the Green Wave off the board before further narrowing the gap in the sixth. Cincinnati scored twice on Bremner’s two-run homer, taking the score to 9-4 in favor of the Green Wave.

Tulane extended his lead to 13-4 before the Cincinnati offense springed back into action, reducing that lead to 13-5 in the ninth. The Bearcats got a run on Nicholson’s one-time RBI double. The Bearcats couldn’t get any closer as neither team scored again in the ball game.

GAME NOTES

  • Nicholson had a big day on the plate going 3-on-4 with a double and his 12th home run of the year. He hit .625 (5-for-8) in three games in the tournament.
  • In his first at-bat of the tournament, Redshirt Senior Dondrae Bremner started a two-run home run to right field. It was his fourth homer of the season and his second in the last three games played.
  • Merritt went 1-for-4 and finished his tournament with a .417 batting average, five runs scored and six RBIs.
  • O’Connor hit the side in the fifth, giving him the first three strikeouts of his career. He ended the day with five strikeouts.
