The report, produced through a detailed analytical assessment of millions of records from before (2019-2020) and during (2020-2021) COVID-19 periods, shows the terrifying impact of global bans on academic integrity.

The study found that educational institutions around the world are adopting the fully online learning model in April 2020, an average of 49.6% of all works submitted by students were plagiarized.

While plagiarism has increased in student submissions around the world, the effects of COVID-19-induced bans are more evident in some countries than others. Most of Europe and Australia recorded a slight increase in plagiarism in student work. France had the highest result with a 124% change, followed by Australia at 122%, UK at 119% and Germany at 116%. In contrast, countries are like Brazil and India Faced with prolonged COVID-19 lockdowns and limited technological infrastructure availability resulted in a more pronounced change in academic dishonesty, 147% and 144% respectively.

The study’s data also shows that over the past year students have shown a unique audacity in their dishonest approaches. They went beyond typical plagiarism patterns and turned to very naive methods such as literal copying. In quantitative terms, the plagiarism rate for student work increased significantly, with the identical match content reportedly increasing by 39%, while the paraphrased content increased by 31%.

Historically, plagiarism has been an ongoing problem in higher education, but as high schools move to distance learning too, increases in the K-12 level have also been seen. High school student submissions saw an average increase in plagiarism of 43%, which was much higher than the average increase in student submissions of 29%.
