Cougars take cowboy stampede titles

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Houston Women’s Cross-Country Program scored 40 points and took the top spot in the Lake Charles Toyota Cowboy Stampede held by the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex on Saturday morning.

Four Houston student-athletes finished in the top 10, including the reigning American Athletic Conference Women’s Athlete of the Week Darby Gauntt who finished third with a time of 17: 28.2.

Gauntt was joined by Maddy Castleberry who occupies sixth place (17: 43.2), Erin Rivera in the ninth (18: 14.3) and Claire Meyer (18: 15.6) in 10. Eight Cougars ended up in the top 20 and helped Houston to the best runner-up McNeese (50) with 10 points.

The Houston men finished fourth, highlighted by another strong performance from Brandon Sea Rails finished third with a score of 19: 07.6 in the 4-mile. It was included in the top 25 by Alan Elbanna (12th place, 20: 04.2).

Houston concludes its schedule with the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Texas A&M on Saturday, October 16, ahead of the American Athletic Conference Championships in Lakeland, Florida on Friday, October 29.
