Recovery from hurricane-induced damage can be stressful. Here are some tips to help avoid scams and unnecessary legal challenges when hiring home and property repair contractors.

  • Use only licensed contractors. Check a home improvement license with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) by calling or visiting 311 nyc.gov/dcwp. Check the license status of an electrician or plumber through the Dept. of Buildings (DOB) under nyc.gov/building.
  • Check references. Ask the contractor for multiple references and review them. Call 311 to check the complaint history with DCWP.
  • Receive written estimates and employment contracts. For legal reasons, cost estimates and contracts should always be in writing. Find out which documents you need under nyc.gov/dcwp.
  • Check the contractor’s approvals. Most electrical and plumbing work requires a DOB permit.
  • Do not pay the full price in advance or in cash. Pay only part of the total amount in advance and the balance after completing the job. Payment should be made by check, never in cash.
  • Beware of price gouging. Under the city’s state of emergency, it is illegal for businesses to raise the price of goods or services that are essential to health or safety, including home repairs. If you suspect a company is price gouging, file a complaint through DCWP. Track scams in your area with the Better Business Bureau Scam tracker.
