Fixed sidewalk hazard in Detroit University District after 2 years

DETROIT – Detroit neighborhood residents were concerned about a section of sidewalk ripped open with a gaping hole. It had been a problem for almost two years.

The city’s university district is a family-oriented area and full of strollers, pets, and just down the street is a school with hundreds of children.

After neighbors contacted Help Me Hank to investigate, calls were placed and a story about the area was revealed.

In 2018 DTE Energy installed a new gas pipeline in the area and work was also carried out nearby. The entire paving was completed in 2019. Some time later, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department began work on a catch basin. This repair was done but the sidewalk was not.

Long weeds now surround the area.

Since being contacted, DWSD has responded and the first and most urgent part of the repair is complete – filling the large hole and securing the corner. The town will soon be returning for a full repair and re-paving to make the area look like other corners of the well-kept neighborhood.

Residents there said they called multiple city departments and DTE to look for answers, but one of the most effective tools available to get a quick response from the city is the Improve Detroit app. Residents can exchange information and photos.

Local residents will receive an answer within 24 hours.
