Huskers finished second in Oklahoma

Husker ladies golfer Vanessa Bouvet and Megan Whittaker tied in sixth place with the best results of the season to lead Nebraska to second place on Tuesday at the Dale McNamara Invitational in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Bouvet (France / Brunei) finished with rounds of 68 and 69 on the par-72, 6,200-yard layout at the Golf Club of Oklahoma to overcome an opening round of 78, the second-best tournament result of her career in Nebraska.

Whittaker hit Bouvet with a 215 (-1) of her own, including a 71 in the finals, after opening with a 70 on Monday. The senior from Elkhorn, Neb., Added a 74 in the second round for the best three-round total of her college career, beating the 219 (+3) she got on her way to an 18th place Ten Championship in Maineville, Ohio.

Kirsten Baete added their own strong scores including a final 70 on Tuesday that followed the early rounds of 74 and 75. The senior from Beatrice, Neb., Was 14th with 219 (+3). Second year Michaela Vavrova added Nebraska’s number 4 in the finals with a 74 (+2) to help the Huskers get the best season of 284 in the finals. Vavrova (Slovakia) finished with a total of 233 (+18) in three rounds and finished 56th.

Nebraska’s three-round team score of 872 (+8) was also a season high and the best round of any team in the tournament. The Huskers remained 11 strokes behind the 861 team champions UNLV, who finished the tournament with (-3). Nebraska finished 10 shots ahead of third-placed Fresno State (882), 11 shots ahead of Sam Houston State (883) and 14 shots ahead of fifth-placed BYU (886).

“It was a really solid overall team performance today,” said Johnson. “We’re improving every week and we’re really excited about all the progress we’re making. We’re giving ourselves a lot of birdie opportunities and implementing them with higher percentages than we did earlier in the season.”

student in the first year Miu Takahashi (Japan) tied 53rd (232) in the field with 75 players, one shot ahead of Vavrova. Takahashi gave the Huskers a strong start with an opening round of 71 (-2) before settling for rounds of 81 and 80, to close the tournament. Second year Lindsey Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) Was 59th (234) as a single player outside of the Husker line-up. Thiele put on three solid rounds of 77, 79 and 78.

UNLV’s Sydney Bryan and Oklahoma State’s Hailey Jones shared medalist honors totaling 212 (-4) over three rounds. Jones was one of three Oklahoma state golfers who competed individually in the tournament field.

Nebraska is concluding its Fall 2021 campaign at the White Sands Intercollegiate, hosted October 22-24 by the University of Houston at the Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas.
