Marsh ranks 10th in the US Olympic Trials

EUGENE, ore. – Senior citizens Erin Marsh finished action for Duke Athletics Sunday night, finishing 10th in a delayed second day of the heptathlon at the US Olympic Trials at Hayward Field. Marsh finished third among all colleagues in the field with 5,839 points.

Marsh started the day in ninth place with 3,637 points and wanted to make up ground in the first event of the day. Marsh did just that in the long jump, who jumped 5.84 m (19-2 feet) to eighth place and registered 801 points to stand at 4,438 points in five disciplines.

In the second event of the day, Marsh competed in the javelin throw, claiming her eighth place standing with a throw of 33.40 m (109-7 feet) with a total of 541 points. Born in Buford, Ga., Finished 11th overall and reached 4,979 points when he made it into the final.

After a heat delay dragged the 800m start for several hours, Marsh stepped into the event to finish strong. Marsh finished ninth among all remaining competitors, collecting 860 points with a time of 2: 17.32. With 5,839 points she finished 10th overall.

The finish crowned a great season for Duke Athletics in which Marsh, a graduate student, finished in the top 15 of the US Olympic Trials Brittany Aveni and senior Lauren Hoffmann, USTFCCCA All-America Honors from eight Blue Devils and the first women’s ACC outdoor championship in program history among many outstanding moments.

For Marsh, a historic single season ended with a second place in the heptathlon at the ACC Outdoor Championships, a third place in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships and a fourth place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
