Nathaniel Mechler wins Canadian national title in the decathlon

HOUSTON University of Houston athletics alum, Nathaniel Mechler scored 7,701 points to win the decathlon at the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Athletics Trials in 2021.

The former Cougar (2016-19) won the 110-meter hurdles, 100-meter, 400-meter, pole vault and 1500-meter to win the national title. Mechler showed a strong performance series on two days of competition and finished the first day of action with 3,921 points and second place. After a victorious performance over 1500 meters, Mechler climbed to the top of the overall standings. With a time before the end of the race in second place, Mechler finished the second day of the decathlon with a time of 4: 28.29 with 3,780 points.

Mechler ended his Cougar career as the American Athletic Conference Champion and NCAA All-American in the heptathlon.
