Sycamores welcome Melissa Burke as NCAA Compliance Assistant Director

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Indiana State University Associate AD for Compliance Joel McMullen announced the cessation Melissa Burke as ISU Athletics’ new associate chief of NCAA compliance.

Burke joins the Sycamores through stints at Chadron State College and Farmers State Bank in Chadron, Nebraska. She brings 10 years of college experience to the position, including serving as Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administration at Chadron State in 2015-16.

“I don’t know if I can put into words the great honor of being part of Indiana State University’s track and field program,” Burke said. “From the moment I entered the campus for my interview, I felt at home. I am grateful for the trust of the institution, Sherard Clinkscales, Angie Lansing and Joel McMullen have instilled in me. I’m thrilled to be working with someone as knowledgeable and established as Joel and I’m eager to learn everything I can. I couldn’t be happier to be a Sycamore!”

Burke assumes the role of NCAA Compliance Assistant Director following the departure of Dr. Tonya Sawyer, who assumed the role of Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA at Eastern Illinois University in mid-March.

“We’re thrilled to have Melissa join us,” McMullen said. “She brings a wealth of experience and talent to our compliance efforts. We had a number of very qualified applicants from across the country and Melissa rose to the top. She has some big shoes to fill after Dr. Tonya Sawyer assumed the position of Head Compliance a few months ago in Eastern Illinois, but I have no doubt that Melissa will be up to the challenge. ISU is fortunate to have Melissa join us and I have every confidence that she will make us an even stronger department in every way.”

Burke most recently worked as a customer service representative at Farmers State Bank since December 2017, where she assisted in completing daily counter transactions, conducting monthly compliance reviews and investigating fraudulent charges. She also acted as the social media contact for the store and helped train new employees.

Prior to her time at Farmers State Bank, she served on the track and field administration staff at Chadron State from 2007-2016. Burke served as an Assistant AD/SWA from 2015-2016, where she chaired monthly compliance meetings, investigated potential NCAA rule violations, and served on various campus committees. She also helped with fundraising and created and developed promotional events.

Prior to her promotion, Burke served as Chadron State’s Compliance Coordinator from 2011 to 2015 and Assistant Sports Administration from 2007 to 2011. She was also Administrative Assistant for the Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District from 2005 to 2007.

Burke, a former women’s basketball standout, was inducted into the Chadron State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. At the end of her playing career, she ranked ninth in program history in career points and helped lead the Eagles to three consecutive RMAC postseason berths as well as two trips to the tournament semifinals. She was the recipient of the 2001 Clyde Bond Memorial Award, an honor bestowed annually on a deserving Chadron State sports scientist who demonstrates leadership, character and athletic ability.

Burke has a daughter, Anika, who currently attends and plays volleyball at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio.
