GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – He came back for another season at East Carolina University and was as good as every Pirates mug we’ve seen.

Now it’s going to be a long weekend of waiting for ECU star Gavin Williams to receive a call from a team that will select him for the Major League Baseball Draft.

Major League scouts told him he could go anywhere in the first round, between picks four and 30. Those are gaudy numbers as most Williams predictions will be somewhere between pick No. 20 and No.

The tallest ECU player ever drafted is ranked 9th when Jeff Hoffman was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014. Williams has spoken to a number of teams in the past few days and could have left ECU after the last season has been cut short due to COVID-19.

He gambled and he didn’t say anything that he would have done differently.

There is now another pirate who could go into the first round on Sunday. American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Connor Norby is expected to feature his name early in the MLB draft. Some predictions let him come too late in the first round too.

Norby won the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award in 2021 recently.

There is a good chance other ECU players will be drafted as the draft extends over 20 rounds over three days. Click the video above to see his interview with WNCT Sporting Director Brian Bailey about the draft and his expectations.
