Dubai, United Arab Emirates: A research team led by the Canadian University Dubai (CUD) has identified a new technology-based approach to combating academic integrity using machine learning techniques. The research is the subject of a recent article entitled “Machine Learning based approach to Examen Cheating Detection” published in PLOS ONE, a prestigious academic journal ranked 30th in all disciplines worldwide by Google Scholar.

The academic study was initiated when the COVID-19 pandemic forced educational institutions around the world to adopt distance learning and assessment methods. The project was led by Dr. Firuz Kamalov, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering at CUD, in collaboration with Dr. Hana Sulieman, Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), and Dr. David Santandreu. directed Calonge, Associate Professor and Director, Corporate Training, at CUD.

In support of the study, Dr. Kamalov: “One of the biggest challenges in online education is maintaining the academic integrity of student reviews. The lack of direct supervision by lecturers during final examinations harbors a considerable risk of scientific misconduct. We set out to explore new approaches to identify potential audit fraud using machine learning techniques. ”

The new method uses an algorithm to identify cases of fraud based on an analysis of student grades after the exam. The inputs into the algorithm are series of grades – from quizzes, intermediate exams and the final examination of an entire class. The procedure takes into account the grades prior to the final exam, the grades from the final exam, and the overall performance of the class for assessment.

It is expected that the new technology will complement the work of commercial plagiarism detection software and potentially provide an alternative, non-intrusive deterrent to remote inspections. Dr. Santandreu Calonge

said, “The lessons learned from this study can help academics and administrators interested in maintaining the academic integrity of course reviews. It also lays the foundation for future educational research on outlier detection techniques. “

This project complements the growing body of collaborative research at the university that supports the growth and advancement of the UAE’s knowledge economy. Dr. Kamalov concluded, “Our collaboration with AUS shows that the UAE is becoming a hotbed for high quality, real-world research that has the potential to change practices around the world. At CUD, we continue to be committed to building more relationships in the region that will give students and faculty more opportunities to grow and thrive in an environment that encourages creativity and innovation. “
