Hello neighbours! It’s me again, Paige Austin, your Los Angeles Daily host.

The autumn is here! Wednesday is the first day of fall, but Los Angeles will feel more like the dog days of summer, with highs of 107 degrees in parts of the valley. Officials warn residents to stay hydrated and avoid the afternoon sun. Cooling off is expected on Thursday.

But the race for LA Mayor is just beginning to get hot.

Los Angeles City Councilor Kevin de Leon announced on Tuesday his intention to run for mayor’s office in 2022, making him the most prominent candidate among the already crowded field of contenders. Congresswoman Karen Bass will reportedly make a decision this week on whether to run. If she runs, she and de Leon – two progressives with deep roots and long political histories in the community – would be considered early front-runners, according to at least one straw poll.

Let’s get to today’s headlines.
