TOKYO, October 7, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Waseda University opened the Waseda International House of Literature (nickname Haruki Murakami Library) on October 1, 2021. The decision to build the new facility on the main campus was made after the alumnus and the author Haruki Murakami deposited and donated his valuable works and unpublished materials Waseda University.

In addition to Murakami’s works and literature, the new facility will also serve as a research center for translation and international literature. Researchers and Murakami aficionados from around the world can look forward to a wide range of archival materials, such as ephemera on Murakami’s writing and scrapbooks containing interviews, literature reviews, essays and other materials on Murakami’s works.

The university hopes that the Waseda International House of Literature will help promote and facilitate global exchange, as the institution’s official name suggests, and looks forward to creating a cosmopolitan house of literature with and for everyone.

Waseda International House of Literature (Haruki Murakami Library) principles and activities:

Based on Murakami’s literary works, the Waseda International House of Literature has set itself the goal of globalizing the study and communication of literature and taking part in initiatives aimed at international exchange.

The aim of the facility is to organize and preserve the materials deposited and donated to the Waseda International House of Literature and to create a research environment through open access to the materials. In addition, the library would like to create a space for exchange – a place that enables an open international exchange of literature and culture through seminars, symposia and special exhibitions. Waseda International House of Literature will also endeavor to make exhibits and features available online to all.

– “Literature in Architecture, Architecture in Literature” (2F exhibition space)

Events: Friday 1st October 2021Friday, February 4, 2022

This exhibition shows the complete conversion of the former building 4 on the Waseda Campus into the Waseda International House of Literature by a world-famous architect Kengo Kuma. The exhibition is presented through a dialogue between the different people involved in the renovation of the building. The exhibition also prominently features books related to architecture and literature.
