Simon Gelman’s What I Was Thinking is a literary discourse about a man’s beliefs and opinions and their metamorphosis as they have proven themselves over time.
The book, published by Page Publishing Inc., is not intended to recall and teach history, but rather to demonstrate how certain thoughts are formed and influenced by external factors.
The seed for the idea of ​​writing a book had its roots in Gelman some seventeen years ago; at the end of his chairmanship of the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. His limited knowledge of American culture and inexperience with non-medical writing hampered the writing of the book. As the years went by, the conceived idea evolved and the question of whether or not to write the book gradually morphed into the way of writing it. Gelman managed to get over the uncertainties and decided to just tell the story.
The first few pages of the book resemble memoirs that offer a retrospective analysis of Gelman’s thoughts and actions he chose at different stages in his life. The following chapters cover specific topics such as chairing an academic medical school, the relationship between doctors and patients, socialism and capitalism, and anti-Semitism.
What I thought does not suggest what should be done in one situation or another. Rather, it tells how and why the decisions (right or wrong) were made depending on the background and knowledge acquired.
Simon Gelman has served as President of the Society of Academic Anesthesia Chairs, the Morton Society, and the Academy of Mentors in Anesthesiology; an editor of major anesthesiology journals; and Honorary Member of the Israeli Society of Anesthesiologists and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anesthetists.
