The beginning

Chandha’s early career revolved around work in academia and research. But it all started with the VIT-Universität rejecting his research project because it did not meet the binding institutional formatting guidelines.

“My research was fresh and original, but the editing tools I used to create documents were not collaborative and designed for research. As a result, a significant amount of man-hours was wasted formatting and reformatting. “ Chandha shared.

Of course he wasn’t alone! He found that his colleagues also waste tens of thousands of valuable working hours reformatting manuscripts.

Chandha took on the challenges of the research publication process directly and was given his calling to pave his own path to success and innovation.

He participated in the AngelHack Hackathon and developed a prototype that would change his life and the workflow of future researchers. It only took him a weekend to design a simple, one-page application that would allow users to automatically format an MS Word document in the IEEE journal style.

Chandha’s prototype won the hackathon and received over 4K beta requests in just two months. After a series of user interactions, building an end-to-end platform for writing and collaborating on research was the next visionary step to turn this idea into reality.

He soon found his co-founder Shanu Kumar, who faced similar challenges while writing his thesis. Typesetting was built!

Minting success: from zero income to seven-digit amounts

What came up next was a roadblock that put the business venture in dire straits.

“We were in the early innings when we quit our jobs, put all of our savings, and hired four engineers. We underestimated the effort it would take to create a real-time web editor and the lack of a team of technical experts made it really difficult for us to sail through. Within five months we were short of cash and were about to give up. “ said Chandha.

A startup’s lifeblood, i.e. funding and cash flow, has been difficult to secure, but as Chandha says, “Endurance is greater than IQ.”

Chandha took the outbound approach of writing cold emails to founders, angel investors, tech billionaires and VCs to communicate about the product – Typeset.

The correspondence was concise and informative, including all of the data points related to the size and traction of the publishing market, comprehensive enough to answer any questions from potential donors. The email drafts were built on the storytelling strategy to bring the brand to life.

A month later, Typeset made a $ 1 million angel investment and acquired consulting relationships that fueled the company’s eventual success. However, this wasn’t the only challenge before the company began realizing significant ROI.

In order to establish a strong brand identity, Chandha experimented with various inorganic paid advertising models, but they proved to be unprofitable. Eventually, he and his team switched to organic inbound growth marketing strategies. After six months of hard work and dedicated effort, the revenue began to pour in.

“Today we have an organic user acquisition engine that requires minimal marketing expenses. This robust acquisition pipeline is iterative, predictable and scalable. “ says Chandha.

Chandha’s views and beliefs paid off. In just a few years, Typeset’s sales have risen to seven digits.
