A family-friendly Veterans Day Tribute for the Elmhurst community will be held on Sunday, November 7th, on Elmhurst University campus, which includes music, video tributes to veterans and a fundraising project to support our troops.

The Elmhurst University Wind Ensemble, American Legion THB Post 187, and the Martha Ibbetson Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will team up to deliver this special hour-long event.

The brass ensemble will have patriotic music and video presentations, and Elmhurst Mayor Scott Levin, two members of the Elmhurst University Veterans Association and others will speak. The American Legion Color Guard, accompanied by Color Guards and members of Elmhurst Boy Scout Troops 78, 82 and 117, will add to the color and pomp of the event.

The wind ensemble will perform patriotic music favorites, including John Philip Sousas Legion comrades, a Sousa march dedicated to the American Legion. A medley of popular music from World War II to the Gulf War is performed as well as film music, ending with John Williams’ Hymn to the fallen, accompanied by a moving video tribute.

The Daughters of the American Revolution invites attendees to Honor A Veteran by providing a name and, if desired, a photo that will be shown at the concert. To provide a veteran’s name, please contact [email protected] for more information.

The DAR Project’s Patriot Committee is also asking patrons to contribute items to Operation: Bean of Life. The project is run by a military chaplain on a base in the Middle East and supports a coffee house that offers soldiers traveling through from all areas of active military service a place of resilience and comfort away from military life free of charge. Items to be donated include socks, toiletries, snacks, and hot beverage mixes.

Veterans Day will be honored on Sunday, November 7th, at 12 noon in the Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel. Entry is free and public. For more information on this event and future performances, please visit elmhurst.edu/music.
